How do you re-lay a patio? The concrete slabs have sunken and are uneven, so need to be lifted and re-layed?

  1. Exactly like that.

    Lift the old slabs. Level the base with sand and relay the slabs.

  2. yes and put sand under them to keep them level you can check them with a sprit level

  3. Assuming the problem is not owing to an inadequate base you can either remove the slabs and level the bed as already suggested. Make a better job by relaying them on a dry mix (sand and cement) which will harden in time or do the best job of all and relay them on a wet concrete bed.

  4. I am doing just that with the slabs put down 15years ago which have lifted because of tree roots. I am lifting the slabs and digging out sand from underneath and levelling off again before relaying. This needs constant readjustment to get them lying solid with out wobble. Mine aren’t layed with cement just sand underneath and between each slab and I have never had weeds coming up. Well not enough to bother with cementing anyway. Hope your area isn’t too large as it is hard work! :}}

  5. Remove all patio slabs, place more sand to level the area, moisten by misting with water. Use a plate tamper to compact your sand and get it level. Replace your slabs and sweep more sand onto your slabs, working it between the cracks. Use plate tamper again to compress everything down making any minor adjustments needed. Water everything down once more to work sand into the joints and you will have a level patio that will last you a good many years.

    cheers
