How do I lay a brand new gravel driveway? My existing drive is old, cracked concrete. It’s big enough for two cars.?

  1. Unfortunately you are going to have to get the old concrete driveway removed before you can install the crushed stone brand new one. If you just pour it out on top of the concrete, driving back and forth will push the gravel across the concrete surface making furrows where your tires run, and eventually the stone will work it’s way into your lawn or whatever is next to the drive. Once you get a contractor to give you a price for removal/site prep you also want to ask yourself a question: do we get snow and how do I handle snow removal? If there is a snow plow pushing your driveway out, loose stone will be all over the place in the spring, if it is short and you shovel, you will find it really hard to get ice and snow off loose stone and will be unhappy with it.

  2. The proper way to do it would be to remove all the old concrete, prepare and compact the subsurface, the gravel.

  3. look for a nice easy quick finish just shovel the gravel over your drive, its not too dificult all you need is a wheelbarrow and rake and shovel

  4. Whatever you plan to do that old concrete is going to have to be taken out.

  5. Whichever method you use don`t forget to get gravel that is big enough not to get in the tyre treads. If it`s too small it will get picked up in the treads and you`ll leave a trail of gravel in the road.
